Jakob Ingebrigtsen often stays in the middle or back of the pack early in 5000m championship races instead of leading. This isn’t because he’s trying to lose, but because running behind others conserves energy by avoiding wind resistance and unnecessary pacing effort. In long-distance track events, this is a common elite strategy to stay efficient and controlled during the early and middle laps.

Near the final 400–800 meters, he accelerates sharply using his strong finishing speed (“kick”) to overtake the field and win. This approach is a deliberate race strategy designed to maximize stamina and timing, not manipulation like the badminton incident, and it’s one of the key reasons he’s been so successful in major competitions.
