Japan 7.6 Earthquake & Tsunami Alert, Nuclear Powerplant Tsunami Alert

A magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck off the northeastern coast of Japan late on Monday, December 8, 2025, prompting tsunami warnings and evacuation orders for coastal residents. While no deaths have been reported, dozens of people were injured, and some damage occurred. 

Key Details

Magnitude: Initially reported as 7.6 by the USGS, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) later recorded it as 7.5.

Epicenter: The quake struck around 80 kilometers (50 miles) off the coast of Aomori prefecture, on Japan's main island of Honshu, at a depth of about 50-54 km (31-33 miles).

Time: The earthquake occurred at approximately 11:15 p.m. local time on Monday, December 8.

Tsunami: The JMA issued a warning for potential tsunami surges of up to 3 meters (10 feet). Observed waves reached a maximum of 70 centimeters (27 inches) at Kuji port in Iwate prefecture and up to 50 cm elsewhere. The warnings were later downgraded to advisories.

Injuries & Damage: At least 33 people were reported injured, mostly from falling objects. Minor fires, power outages affecting about 800 households, and disruption to expressways and rail services occurred in affected areas like Aomori and Iwate prefectures.

Response: Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi established an emergency task force. Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara urged residents in affected areas to evacuate to higher ground or safe shelters. Nuclear power plants in the region were checked, and no irregularities were reported.

Aftershocks: A series of aftershocks followed, including one with a magnitude of 6.6. Authorities have warned residents that a powerful earthquake could strike again within the week. 

Japan is highly earthquake-prone due to its location on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," a region prone to frequent seismic activity.
