King Harald V died peacefully at Oslo University Hospital on Friday at 6:35 am, after being hospitalized since August 17th with hemolytic anemia, later complicated by an infection. He was 89 and had reigned since 1991. As a young child during World War II, Harald fled Nazi-occupied Norway with his mother and sisters, eventually taking refuge in the United States. He later defied royal tradition by marrying his commoner school sweetheart, Sonja, rather than a noblewoman, and went on to help modernize Norway’s monarchy over his 35-year reign. He’s succeeded by his son, now King Haakon VIII. Tributes poured in from across Europe, Britain’s King Charles called him a “friend whose kindness, compassion and deep sense of duty echoed across the decades.” Norway’s PM said “a whole nation is in mourning.”
My take: “Going from a childhood refugee fleeing occupation to becoming one of Europe’s most beloved and longest-reigning monarchs is a genuinely remarkable arc, his life essentially tracked Norway’s entire modern story.”
CTA: “Sending condolences to the Norwegian royal family and the people of Norway.”
