On October 2, King Haakon VIII formally opened the 171st Storting, Norway’s Parliament, for the first time as sovereign.
Beside him was his daughter, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, marking a striking new chapter for the Norwegian royal family.

The day began at the Royal Palace with the Council of State before father and daughter travelled together to Parliament.
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre presented the Speech from the Throne, prepared by the government, which outlines its programme for the new parliamentary year. King Haakon then formally declared the 171st Storting open.

Queen Mette-Marit was absent after the Royal Court announced that she was suffering from a respiratory infection while continuing her rehabilitation following her lung transplant.
It was also a significant moment coming just weeks after the accession of Haakon, with the Court still observing a period of mourning following the death of King Harald V.
