Europe’s oldest living monarch, King Harald V of Norway, was in a ’very serious’ condition in hospital on Thursday and his family were gathering by his bedside, the country's royal court has said.

His wife, Queen Sonja, and his son, Crown Prince Haakan, have cancelled all planned events.

King Harald V has been on the throne since 1991.
