Microsoft's ad unit was fined $9.6 million for selling dating app data.
Norway's privacy watchdog just handed down the biggest fine in its history — and the target wasn't the app, it was the middleman. From 2018 to 2020, the adtech company Xandr took Grindr users' data and passed it to thousands of advertisers in automated ad auctions, assuming consent it never checked. The regulator rejected the blame-shifting: every company in the chain needs its own legal basis. This fine is 42% bigger than Grindr's own 2021 fine — and it's based on Xandr's own revenue, not Microsoft's.
The privacy group noyb called it a valuable precedent: the first time the middlemen, not the app, took the biggest hit.
