OSLO — Thousands of mourners gathered at the Royal Palace Chapel in Oslo on Tuesday as Norway began a week of public lying-in-state for King Harald V, following the monarch’s passing at age 89. Draped in the Royal Standard, the casket of Europe’s longest-reigning contemporary monarch was escorted by the royal family, led by his successor King Haakon VIII, who formally swore his constitutional oath before the Storting earlier in the day. The lying-in-state offers the public an opportunity to pay their final respects through September 8 ahead of the official state funeral at Oslo Cathedral and final interment at Akershus Fortress on September 9.
