On May 4, 1945, as the war in Europe drew to a close, a woman named Virginia sat at her typewriter in Norway and poured her heart into a letter to her husband, Rolf, a sailor in the Norwegian Navy. She had life-changing news to share: she was expecting a baby. She sealed the envelope, sent it on its way, and waited for it to cross the ocean.

Instead, the letter was marked "return to sender" and vanished into history. For 72 years, the yellowed, unopened envelope sat hidden—eventually turning up inside the sleeve of a used record album bought by Allen Cook's son-in-law. When Allen and his family opened the sealed envelope, they realized they were holding a lost piece of a family's history.

Using the internet, Allen's daughter tracked down a man named Rolf Christoffersen in Santa Barbara, California—the son of the sailor. Sadly, the elder Rolf had already passed away, never knowing Virginia had written those words. Yet, seven decades later, the letter finally reached the family it was meant for, ensuring that a son learned of the quiet, hopeful message his mother sent across an ocean a lifetime ago.
