Norway’s 2026 lobster season opened on 1 October. A 4 October report highlights encouraging results in lobster refuges, while official 2026 rules confirm two new protected areas near Tvedestrand. Our original evidence explainer shows why protected-versus-control sampling matters.

The chart is EARLIER research, reported by IMR in 2024: after four years, lobsters per research trap increased 245% in protected areas and 87% in controls, each from its own baseline. Reserves were established in 2006. This is not a 2026 nationwide population count. The 2026 resource assessment still identifies lobster abundance and fishing pressure as concerns.

Archive European lobster photos were taken in France (upload dates 2014 and 2017; capture dates not established). Swedish trap gear was photographed in 2019. These illustrate species and fishing context, not the new Norwegian refuges.
