While Erling Haaland is going viral for replying to memes and random comments, Norway’s original GOAT and first king‑saint is quietly drawing thousands of pilgrims offline.

After a week‑long trek across Norway’s countryside, pilgrims from around the world completed the ancient St. Olaf’s Way, arriving at Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, where Bishop Erik Varden — who preached this past Lent’s retreat to Pope Leo — welcomed them and celebrated a votive Mass in the saint’s honor on his July 29 feast day.

He blessed them with a relic of the Viking king who once carried a battle axe — and later, a crown of sainthood.

“It is still a very secular country,” Bishop Varden said, “but it is not devoid of Christian life. The Lord is present. Things are quiet, but things are happening.”

A thousand years after his death, the king who helped bring Christianity to Norway is still drawing souls home — long before football stars made the country trend online.
