The Arctic Town Where the Ground Won't Let You Go

Longyearbyen, the world's northernmost town in Svalbard, Norway, closed its cemetery in 1950 after discovering that permafrost preserves bodies — including victims of the 1918 flu pandemic. Sources include BBC, Wikipedia's cited history of Longyearbyen, and Visit Svalbard figures.
