Norway knighted a penguin. A real king penguin—with a real knighthood.
In 1972 the Norwegian King’s Guard adopted Nils Olav, a king penguin at Edinburgh Zoo, as their mascot. Guards visit, parade, and the penguin inspects the troops. Ranks climb over the years. In 2008 King Harald V approved a knighthood. The name and honors pass to successive penguins; in 2023 Sir Nils Olav III was promoted to Major General.
A penguin who outranked half the parade—and a warm friendship that still stands.
