Norway’s new King Haakon has addressed the nation after the death of his father, King Harald V, delivering an emotional tribute to the monarch he called a “wonderful dad” and announcing the beginning of a new era for Norway.

Speaking from the Royal Palace in Oslo, Haakon remembered King Harald as a warm, caring father, grandfather and husband. He described his father as a source of warmth and security and recalled his gentle humor, generosity and ability to make people feel at ease.

Haakon also remembered how King Harald helped unite Norwegians during moments of national tragedy, including the aftermath of the 2011 Utoya attacks and the bombing of Norway’s government district.

The address became especially emotional when Haakon spoke about his mother, Queen Sonja. Saturday would have marked the couple’s 58th wedding anniversary. Haakon praised his mother’s lifelong partnership with Harald before telling her: “Happy wedding anniversary, dear Mom.”

The new king also acknowledged the enormous responsibility now before him. Following his father’s long reign, Haakon said it was now his turn and pledged to find his own style while remaining committed to serving Norway.

Haakon will formally take his oath before parliament on Tuesday, swearing to uphold Norway’s constitution and laws. There will be no coronation under Norway’s modern constitutional system.
