Powerful explosions rocked a Russian air base in Crimea and sent towering clouds of smoke over the landscape on August 9. The explosions killed at least one person and injured eight others, Russian authorities claimed. Russia’s Defence Ministry said the Saki base on the Black Sea had not been shelled and added that munitions had blown up there. Russia’s TASS News Agency said that the explosions’ primary cause appeared to be a “violation of fire safety requirements”. After the explosions, some Ukrainian officials warned the blasts were “just the beginning,” and vowed to liberate the territory. There is no clarity on whether Ukraine was behind the attack or whether it even has the capability to launch such an attack.
