Norway is mourning a king and welcoming a new one.

King Harald V died Friday at age 89 after more than 35 years on the throne. Harald went into exile as a child during the Nazi occupation of Norway, represented his country in sailing at three Olympics and spent nine years holding out for permission to marry his longtime sweetheart, Sonja Haraldsen.

As king, he helped modernize the monarchy and became known for championing inclusion, LGBTQ+ equality and religious tolerance.

Harald’s son automatically succeeded him as King Haakon VIII. His wife, Mette-Marit, is now queen, and their daughter, Crown Princess Ingrid Alexandra, is heir to the throne.
