Norway has a new monarch. Crown Prince Haakon has succeeded his father, King Harald V, and taken the name King Haakon VIII.

The new king met government ministers on Friday, August 28, during an extraordinary council following King Harald V’s death.

King Haakon VIII has chosen the personal motto “Everything for Norway,” continuing a tradition followed by his father, grandfather and great-grandfather since Norway’s modern monarchy was established in 1905.

King Harald V died after more than 10 days in hospital, with his son succeeding him immediately.

The name Haakon carries deep historical significance in Norway. Six medieval Norwegian kings were named Haakon, while the first monarch of the modern Norwegian monarchy adopted the name Haakon VII in 1905.
